Mini storage is very handy when buying a home especially if you are relocating to an area and are not yet ready to buy a home. Mini storage is a great place 'park' your stuff while you are living in a hotel room or crashing at a friend's.
On the other side of the table, mini storage is an important service to consider when selling your home. Though it's an extra cost and you may need to rent a truck and carry all of that stuff, clearing out your home is a critical part of the staging process. Home buyers are looking for bigger, brighter, roomier, clean and clear so it's important to give them what they want so that they give you what you want: a sale!
The comparison between adding rooms and renting a self-storage kiosk may not be a fair one, but it highlights the alternative to offsite storage. People try to move their over-stuffed furniture around to 'fool' buyers into thinking the house is roomy and open. Face it, you've grown and added stuff every year and you might not be selling if you had enough room! If you're downsizing then you don't need pod storage, you need a yard sale.
We recommend a self storage kiosk, such as the drive-up self-storage units, over the storage pods that get parked on your driveway or in your backyard. Those units are great for houses under construction to keep furniture and belongings safe and close to home, but they give the wrong impression for home sales; don't do it.
Read our page on 'Staging a House to Sell' before deciding, but remember that a mini storage unit is a much cheaper cost than adding a new room!
